To start, what can we help you with?
Discover the difference between Preventative and Regenerative treatments.
SPF is one of those things we all know we should be using… but somehow it gets skipped, forgotten, or only remembered when the suitcase comes out.
At Rediscovered Skin Clinic, we see this all the time. Patients are great with SPF on holiday, then it quietly disappears from the routine once they’re back home. A few months later, they start noticing pigmentation, uneven skin tone, or that their skin just doesn’t look as fresh as it used to. It can feel like it’s come out of nowhere. In reality, it’s been building in the background for years.
Sun protection isn’t just for beach days. It’s an everyday habit. And if you want your skin to stay clear, even-toned and glowing long term, it’s the consistency that really counts.
Why SPF is non-negotiable (even when it’s cloudy)
We hear this all the time: “But I’m not burning, so I must be fine, right?” If only it were that simple.
Most sun damage isn’t dramatic. It’s subtle, slow, and happens without you really noticing. UVA rays are around all year in the UK, even on grey, overcast days, and they go deeper into the skin than you’d expect. Over time, they quietly affect your skin by breaking down collagen, triggering redness, and encouraging pigmentation to settle in.
UVB burns your skin. UVA ages it.
In clinic, we often meet patients in their 30s or 40s who feel like their skin has suddenly changed. When we look a bit closer, it’s usually years of everyday exposure finally catching up.
SPF is your foundation. It’s non-negotiable. But for many people, especially if pigmentation or early ageing is a concern, it’s not always the whole story.
Even when you’re doing a good job with SPF, your skin is still dealing with the after-effects of UV exposure. Over time, this can continue to trigger pigmentation and affect how your skin ages beneath the surface. This is where taking things one step further can really make a difference.
We’ve always been, and continue to be, big fans of the AlumierMD SPF range, and that hasn’t changed. However, we’ve recently reintroduced Heliocare into clinic. It’s a range we stocked many years ago, and after so many client requests, it felt like the right time to bring it back.
Both ranges have their place, and having Heliocare available again simply gives us more flexibility to tailor sun protection to different skin types, concerns, and lifestyles.
This is where Heliocare comes in. And just to be clear, many Heliocare products are SPF, but they go a step further than your standard sunscreen.
Heliocare combines high-level UV protection with powerful antioxidant support, helping to protect the skin both on the surface and at a deeper level. Alongside their topical SPFs, they also offer oral supplements, giving you that added layer of protection from within.
At the centre of it all is Fernblock®, a plant extract that helps defend the skin against UV damage and supports overall skin health.
Think of it as a more advanced approach to sun protection.
While the SPF element works to shield your skin from UV rays, the added antioxidants help deal with the damage that can still occur. This includes neutralising free radicals, supporting repair, and calming inflammation that can lead to pigmentation and premature ageing.
In simple terms, it helps your skin stay stronger, calmer, and more resilient, especially when standard SPF alone isn’t quite enough.
In clinic, we often introduce Heliocare when we need more than just a basic SPF.
This might be for clients struggling with pigmentation, melasma, or skin that feels reactive and prone to flare-ups. It’s also a great support if you’re undergoing treatments like laser or chemical peels, or if you spend a lot of time outdoors.
For some people, a standard SPF is enough. But if your skin needs that extra level of support, Heliocare is often the missing piece.
They do slightly different jobs, and together they work really well.
Topical Heliocare protects the surface of the skin while helping reduce oxidative stress. The capsules work from within, supporting your skin’s natural defences and making it more resilient to UV exposure.
Used together, it’s a much more complete approach. And in practice, this is often what gives the most consistent, long-term results.
This is the bit people don’t always realise.
You can have the best treatments in the world, but if your sun protection isn’t strong enough, those results won’t last as long as they should.
Treatments like laser and chemical peels make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Without proper protection, pigmentation can come back quickly, and sometimes more noticeably.
We often see patients with great initial results that just don’t hold, simply because protection hasn’t been consistent. Adding something like Heliocare here can make a big difference in keeping everything stable.
SPF is brilliant for prevention, but it won’t undo damage that’s already visible. That’s where treatment comes in. At Rediscovered Skin Clinic, we look at your skin properly and build a plan around what it actually needs.
BBL is one of our go-to treatments for sun damage, and for good reason. It targets pigment and redness in the skin, helping to bring everything back to a clearer, more even baseline. It is particularly satisfying for patients who feel their skin looks blotchy or uneven, as results can feel quite noticeable as the course progresses. If pigmentation is the main concern, this is very often where we start.
MOXI is a gentler option, ideal if you’re starting to notice changes but still want something effective. It’s great for maintaining skin quality and keeping things looking fresh without significant downtime. We often pair it with BBL as they work really well together. BBL focuses on clearing pigment, while MOXI smooths, refines, and gives the skin that overall “polished” look.
Peels are a simple but effective way to give the skin a reset. They help lift away dull, uneven layers and improve surface pigmentation, leaving the skin looking brighter and more even. We tend to start gently and build up over time, which gives more natural, consistent results and keeps the skin comfortable throughout the process.
Once pigmentation is under control, we often shift focus to strengthening the skin itself. Microneedling stimulates collagen, which helps improve texture, fine lines, and overall skin quality. RF microneedling takes this a step further by adding a tightening effect, making it particularly useful if there is also a bit of loss of firmness. It’s a great option for patients who want that “healthier skin” look rather than anything overdone.
Skin boosters are often where everything comes together. They deliver hydration directly into the skin, helping to restore that healthy glow and improve smoothness and radiance. They’re especially helpful if your skin is looking a bit dull, tired, or dehydrated after sun exposure. It’s the kind of treatment that makes your skin look fresher without it being obvious why.
If you’re starting to notice a little loss of firmness, deeper treatments like HIFU or SkinTyte™ can make a real difference. They work beneath the surface to stimulate collagen and improve structure, helping the skin feel firmer and more supported. We often combine these with surface treatments so you’re improving both tone and firmness at the same time, which tends to give a more balanced, natural result.
Why combination plans work best
In reality, it’s rarely just one thing that makes the difference. The best results usually come from a combination of improving the skin, strengthening it, and then protecting it properly.
That might mean treating pigmentation, boosting collagen, improving hydration, and then maintaining everything with strong SPF and antioxidant support.
Skip that last step, and it becomes much harder to hold onto your results.
Do I still need SPF if I take Heliocare capsules?
Yes, always. Capsules support your protection, but they don’t replace SPF.
Can I use Heliocare every day?
Yes, it’s designed for regular use, especially if you want that extra level of protection.
Will Heliocare treat melasma?
Not on its own, but it plays an important role in managing it and preventing it from returning.
Do I really need SPF in winter?
Yes. UVA is around all year and still affects your skin, even when it’s cold or cloudy.
SPF is your starting point. But for many people, especially if pigmentation or early ageing is a concern, it’s only part of the story.
At Rediscovered Skin Clinic in Bournemouth, we take a more complete approach. That might mean combining a good SPF with Heliocare and introducing treatments where needed.
If you’ve started to notice changes in your skin, or you just want to stay ahead of them, booking a consultation is a great place to start.
Because looking after your skin now is what keeps it looking its best later.
