There is a reason autumn is often referred to as “laser season”.
After months of longer days, holidays and more time outdoors, September and October are often when changes in the skin become easier to see. Pigmentation may look darker, freckles can appear more prominent, redness may be more noticeable and skin can start to feel dull or uneven.
At Rediscovered Skin Clinic in Christchurch, Dorset, this is often when we start assessing what summer has left behind and what, if anything, would benefit from treatment.
Two treatments that frequently come into that conversation are BBL and MOXI. They can be used individually or together, depending on whether the main concern is pigmentation, redness, texture, overall skin quality or a combination of these.
Why Is Autumn Known as Laser Season?
Laser treatment is not automatically restricted to autumn and winter. MOXI, for example, can be performed throughout the year when appropriate.
However, many light and laser treatments require careful management of UV exposure before and after treatment. With fewer beach days, summer holidays and prolonged periods outdoors, autumn can make those instructions easier to follow consistently.
This is particularly important when treating pigmentation. UV exposure stimulates melanin production, so careful sun protection remains an important part of both treatment planning and maintaining results.
Autumn also provides a useful window if more than one session is needed. Rediscovered Skin Clinic advises that BBL commonly involves one to three treatments, while MOXI may involve three to four corrective treatments before moving into maintenance where appropriate. The number and spacing of sessions will depend on your skin and the concerns being treated.
Starting in autumn means we can assess the skin, treat it appropriately and review its response without trying to rush a course before an event or summer holiday.

What Is the Difference Between BBL and MOXI?
The simplest way to understand BBL vs MOXI is to look at what we want to change within the skin.
BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It delivers controlled light energy into the skin and is used at Rediscovered Skin Clinic for concerns including pigmentation, sun damage, redness, rosacea-related redness and broken capillaries.
MOXI works differently. This non-ablative fractional laser creates microscopic treatment zones that stimulate renewal while leaving surrounding tissue intact. It can improve superficial pigmentation, uneven tone, rough texture, enlarged-looking pores and early fine lines while supporting collagen production.
In practice, BBL may be the more logical priority when brown spots or redness are particularly noticeable but the skin remains relatively smooth. If the complexion is dull, uneven or rough, with more general changes in skin quality, MOXI may be more appropriate.

Is BBL or MOXI Better for Sun Damage?
It depends on what sun damage looks like on your skin.
Sun exposure can leave several changes behind, including individual brown spots, mottled pigmentation, redness, uneven tone, rougher texture and early fine lines. This is why there is no universal winner when comparing BBL vs MOXI for sun damage.
If discolouration is the dominant concern, BBL may be prioritised. If sun exposure has affected the overall texture, tone and quality of the skin, MOXI may be more relevant.
At Rediscovered Skin Clinic, we therefore assess what sun exposure has actually changed rather than treating “sun damage” as a single concern.
You can also read our guide to sun protection and existing sun damage to understand why prevention and correction need to be considered separately.
Why Combine BBL and MOXI?
Post-summer skin does not always fall neatly into one category. A patient may have visible sun spots and redness alongside dullness, rough texture or early fine lines.
This is where combining BBL and MOXI can be useful. BBL targets unwanted brown and red colour, while MOXI addresses broader changes in tone, texture and skin quality. Using them together allows us to treat different aspects of photodamage within the same treatment plan.
Not everyone needs both. For predominantly textural concerns, MOXI alone may be appropriate. Where pigmentation or redness is the priority, we may focus on BBL. We would normally consider the combination when both discolouration and textural changes are contributing to the overall appearance of the skin.
Rediscovered Skin Clinic offers a full-face BBL and MOXI combination treatment where this approach is clinically appropriate.
What Should You Expect After BBL or MOXI?
Recovery differs slightly between the two treatments.
After BBL, the skin can appear red and feel warm. Areas of pigmentation may temporarily become darker before gradually fading. This is an expected part of the response in appropriately selected pigmentation concerns.
MOXI can also leave the skin red and warm initially. Over the following days, the surface can develop a dry, rough or “sandpaper-like” texture as the microscopic treatment zones heal. These areas typically shed naturally over approximately five to seven days.
The amount of visible recovery can vary according to treatment intensity and individual skin response, which is worth considering if you have an important event approaching.
Neither treatment should be viewed as something to squeeze into the diary immediately before a special occasion. Giving the skin sufficient time to recover, and allowing time for additional sessions where needed, generally makes treatment planning much easier.
What Should You Do After an Autumn Laser Treatment?
Cooler weather does not remove the need for UV protection.
After BBL or MOXI, follow the aftercare given by your practitioner and be consistent with SPF. MOXI aftercare at Rediscovered Skin Clinic includes using moisturising physical sunscreen and avoiding unnecessary sun exposure while the skin recovers.
It is also important not to pick or scrub areas of darkened pigment or the rough texture that can develop after treatment.
Autumn may make sun avoidance easier, but SPF and sensible UV protection remain important throughout the year.
FAQs About BBL vs MOXI
How long should I wait after a sunny holiday before BBL or MOXI?
There is no single waiting period that is appropriate for everybody. Recent tanning and UV exposure should be discussed during your consultation so your practitioner can determine when it is appropriate to treat. Mention recent holidays and significant sun exposure even if your tan appears to have faded.
Can BBL and MOXI be used on the neck and décolletage?
Treatment areas are decided following assessment. Rediscovered Skin Clinic offers MOXI treatment for the neck and décolletage as well as the face. These areas can be particularly relevant when discussing sun damage because they often receive significant cumulative UV exposure.
Can I wear make-up after MOXI?
Rediscovered Skin Clinic advises that make-up can generally be worn 24 hours after MOXI treatment. Always follow the individual aftercare instructions provided following your treatment.
Will my pigmentation disappear permanently after BBL?
BBL can improve existing visible pigmentation, but it cannot prevent new pigmentation from developing. UV exposure can stimulate further pigment production, which is why long-term sun protection remains important after treatment.
Can I have BBL or MOXI before Christmas or a special event?
Potentially, but it is better to allow enough time for treatment, recovery and any planned course rather than booking immediately before the event. Starting in autumn provides more flexibility if you are considering treatment ahead of Christmas, a wedding or another occasion.
Do BBL and MOXI change the way your face looks?
Neither treatment is designed to add volume or alter facial features. They address characteristics of the skin itself, including pigmentation, redness, texture, tone and skin quality. The aim is to improve the condition and appearance of the skin rather than change facial structure.
